12/23 Petition to Biden & U.S. Congress
Every single day since 10/7 becomes more unspeakable. The magnitude of human suffering is unquantifiable. Approximately 20,000 – 28,000 Palestinians have been murdered in the Gaza strip since 10/7. Since the WHO’s Emergency Situation Report released 12/14, in just 9 short days, Israel has made the last hospital, the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Northern Gaza completely nonfunctional and murdered approximately 1,213 – 3,380 Palestinians. In a little over a week, the genocide has accelerated beyond an alarming rate. The conditions in Gaza are apocalyptic. Your continued inaction is unconscionable.
Kamal Adwan Hospital was under a brutal siege beginning 12/8 until approximately 12/16. During this time, Israeli soldiers used bulldozers to desecrate and scatter the remains of the newly buried, sicced a military dog to maul a disabled man in a wheelchair, shot medical staff and patients, mass detained medical staff, used bulldozers and tanks to crush the tents of displaced persons with them inside causing more deaths and injuries, among other heinous acts.
This was all done using the same excuse for when the Al-Shifa medical complex was similarly besieged and destroyed – Kamal Adwan Hospital was a “Hamas control center”. The Washington Post’s recently released independent investigation reveals there was not sufficient evidence that Al-Shifa being used as a Hamas command and control center.
After the mass detention of medical staff taken to an unknown location, Israel released footage on 12/19 showing the likely coerced confession of the hospital director Ahmed Kahlot that he is a Hamas operative. Kahlot very clearly appears under duress. His statement that “[Hamas fighters] hide in hospitals because for them a hospital is a safe place. They won’t be targeted when they are inside a hospital,” doesn’t make much logical sense. Israel has made it clear that they have been intentionally targeting civilian and medical infrastructure since this “war” began. Kahlot’s “confession” seems more likely to be a poor attempt to justify Israel’s prior war crimes against other hospitals and medical complexes.
The U.N. Security Council resolution finally adopted on 12/22 is woefully insufficient to address the dire needs of Palestinians. It’s disturbing that my country not only delayed voting on this resolution for a week, but butchered the content of the resolution to not include calling for an immediate ceasefire. It’s absolutely absurd that even after all of the work the rest of the world had to do to get the U.S. to accept the resolution, our country abstained from voting.
We must have an immediate ceasefire, safe passage for and unrestricted humanitarian aid into Gaza, and an immediate investigation and prosecution for all war crimes committed by every party to this genocide. Do the right thing. Make a ceasefire happen right now.

Estimated deaths as of 12/23 from multiple sources*
Al Jazeera quotes 20,000 dead as of 12/23/23. Al Jazeera always includes the most up-to-date official death tolls on their Breaking/live updates page. Because the daily live pages are refreshed so frequently for each new day, I can’t link you to a specific date. You can always check the Breaking/live section on their site for the most recent official numbers.
EuroMed Monitor quotes an estimated 28,091 dead shown on an infographic posted on their Instagram (link to post) as of 12/23/23. Their website has past infographics, but does not currently have this newest one included as of the writing of this blog post.
This is not unusual- I believe they post infographics first on social media and then add them to the infographic section of their website later on. Prior infographics posted on Instagram and then shown on their site have the exact same figures & data.

EuroMed Monitor quotes an estimated 24,711 dead shown on an infographic posted on their Instagram (link to post) as of 12/14/23.
The estimate for deaths occurring between 12/14 – 12/23, is an approximate using the above sources’ death counts for 12/14 and 12/23. (Al Jazeera & WHO numbers: 20,000 – 18,787 = 1,213 & EuroMed Monitor numbers: 28,091 – 24,711 = 3,380)
*Why are multiple sources used for the death count?

The situation in Gaza has only gotten worse since the AP published this article on 11/21. The official numbers we are seeing from Gaza’s Ministry of Health are undercounted, and have been since at least 11/21 when the Associated Press first reported this.
EuroMed Monitor is a NGO established in 2011 that advocates for the human rights of all persons across Europe and the MENA region. They have a regional office in the Palestinian Occupied Territories. I believe their estimates are credible which is why I quote them, and will continue to, when referring to the estimated death toll.
My personal opinion is that the true number is even higher than estimated- people are dying from starvation, thirst, infections, and illnesses. Even if the genocide ended this moment, these types of deaths will unfortunately continue for some time. I believe their deaths should be counted. They may not have been shot/bombed/etc. by the Israeli military, but their deaths are directly attributable to the total siege, occupation, and intentional** destruction of civilian, water, waste management, and medical infrastructure in Gaza by Israel.
**Why are you accusing Israel of intentionally destroying important infrastructure and targeting civilians?
It’s not an accusation. They’ve admitted to it.
