6/27 Petition to Biden & U.S. Congress

Since 10/7, Israeli forces have intentionally bombed more than 190 UNRWA buildings being used as shelters for displaced people. UNRWA shares coordinates with Israel of all its facilities. It is impossible Israel would not have known they were targeting civilians. That’s the reason why dozens of Israeli reserve forces refuse to return to Gaza. The reservists cite concerns of being complicit in further crimes against humanity. Israeli news outlet Haaretz published an article today, 6/27, sharing the words of the 41 reservists who recently signed a letter explaining why they are refusing to serve. Their letter reads in part, “this invasion, aside from endangering our lives and the lives of innocents in Rafah, won’t bring back the hostages alive… It’s either Rafah or the hostages, and we choose the hostages.”

One of the reservists, an Israeli civics teacher Tal Vardi, said “the moment the operation began in Rafah I felt it was beyond what I could feel right about ethically, stand behind and justify.” Another reservist, Yuval Green, details how he felt forced to cross his moral red line when he was ordered to torch a residential building his unit had commandeered. Green explained he could not understand the reason for doing so, especially when the home was not a Hamas combatant’s. “I said if we’re doing that, I’m going,” Green said, “And they really did burn down the house and I left. I went up during the next leave and didn’t return.” Michael Ofer Ziv, a combat soldier in the Kfir Infantry Brigade, added “in war there aren’t 30,000 people killed, most of them buried beneath the ruins when they’re bombed from the air. The feeling is of indiscriminate firing.”

Israeli forces refusing to continue to participate in genocide isn’t a new development. Back in April at least 30 Israeli paratrooper reservists refused to participate in the planned ground attack of Rafah. Families of Israeli forces refusing service cite concerns over how Israel’s war on Gaza will affect and have affected their mental health. Israeli forces are experiencing an increasing level of attrition since 10/7.

Anyone with a conscience opposes what is being done in Gaza, even Israeli military personnel who’ve been on the ground. If it’s clear to the people enacting a genocide that what they’re being asked to do is morally wrong and serves no strategic goal to return Israeli hostages alive, why isn’t it clear to this administration? The answer, unfortunately, is that we know it’s clear to you – you just don’t seem to care.

I demand that you:

– Hold Israel accountable for a permanent, immediate ceasefire, their gross violations of human rights, and war crimes

– Call for the immediate end of Israel’s occupation and apartheid and support Palestinians in their fight for freedom and peace

– Secure the immediate release and safety of all Palestinians who have been abducted and held captive by Israel, including those whose indefinite detention began prior to 10/7
