Yesterday, 8/18, another journalist in Gaza was attacked while on the job. While covering Israel’s brutal ground invasion of Khan Younis, Salma al-Qadoumi was shot in the back. Israeli forces fired directly on Salma and her colleagues who were clearly marked as press. She was rushed to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, and her current condition isn’t known.
Pre 10/7, Gaza was already one of the most densely populated places in the world with over 2 million people living in an area only 141 square miles, which is approximately the size of Philadelphia or Detroit. Now, the refugees who’ve survived Israel’s genocide so far only have approximately 11% of the area that have been designated as “evacuation safe zones”. That’s 15.51 square miles. For comparison, D.C. is 61.1 square miles and has a population of approximately 689,000. That’s about 11,276 people per square mile, where Gaza is 128,949 people per square mile. Imagine that there are now 1,043.57% more people in D.C. Would the infrastructure be able to handle that even in the most perfect conditions? No – it would be impossible. Now think about the situation in Gaza where there is little to no remaining infrastructure. What do you think the lives of refugees look like?
I demand that you:

Israel’s indiscriminate slaughter as part of their ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza has claimed the lives of 2 more Israeli hostages, today 6/15. It’s been obvious since the beginning Israel doesn’t even care about their own people being collateral damage as long as they are able to continue their ethnic cleansing campaign. In fact, there is mounting, credible evidence that Israel has intentionally sought out to murder their own. The UN Human Rights Commission’s recent report outlines multiple times the “officially revoked” Hannibal Directive was used by Israel, including on 10/7. The directive authorizes Israeli forces to murder other Israelis to prevent their possible capture. A verified statement from an Israeli solider proved they intentionally targeted a vehicle they believed to have Israeli hostages with the explicit purpose to murder, not save them.
Israel has targeted all means necessary to sustain life in Gaza. Every single water well has now been destroyed in northern Gaza. No one in Gaza has access to clean water which has led to a disturbing surge in water borne diseases. No hospital in Gaza has ever been safe from Israel’s intentional destruction, either. The full details of the absolute destruction of the Al-Shifa Hospital only gets clearer by the day – testimony from survivors is disturbing. Israeli forces tortured, murdered, and took hundreds of hostages. Palestinians were subjected to systematic sexual violence as part of the torture. Unfortunately, this is also not a new crime against humanity Israel has committed.
Another recent UN report exposed the systematic targeted sexual and gender-based violence Israel has employed against Palestinians since just 10/7. Throughout occupied Palestine, not just in Gaza, Israel has subjected Palestinian men, women, and children to forced public nudity, sexual torture and abuse, as well as sexual harassment and humiliation. Men and boys have faced the most severe forms of sexual violence. Israeli forces are violently sodomizing men and boys causing severe internal injuries that have even led to multiple deaths.

The Nuseirat refugee camp massacre claimed the lives of 274 and injured upwards of 700. I’d like to know why the “humanitarian floating dock” built with my tax dollars was used to facilitate this atrocity. A truck from the dock disguised as humanitarian aid brought in the Israeli forces that indiscriminately attacked. There are reports American forces were on the ground and involved in addition to the “intelligence forces” who had apparently been planning this for at least a month. So the plan was to carpet bomb a refugee camp with high power explosives? Buildings have been completely leveled in those attacks. That was the specialized hostage rescue operation planned for over a month? Videos, photos, and eye witness reports from the ground describe intentional bombing of residential buildings, drones and planes firing inside where people were sheltering, and anyone moving in the street was murdered.
Today, 6/9, even after the conclusion of the “hostage rescue” that retrieved 4 hostages while reportedly murdering several other hostages, Israel is still bombing the Nuseirat refugee camp. The Al-Aqsa Hospital has already been completely overwhelmed, it is running off of one generator with extremely limited fuel. There is no more room for the massive influx of injured from the Nuseirat area. There’s a reason the UN added Israel to a blacklist of countries and groups that have violated the rights of children in armed conflict. I’m surprised our country hasn’t yet been added to that list. It is beyond reprehensible, unconscionable, and disgusting that you are stealing from the American people to participate in Israel’s genocide. We want this to end and now. The hostage deal has been open from the beginning – all for all. Make Israel release the thousands of Palestinian hostages in their military prison concentration death camps, and facilitate Hamas’ transfer of all Israeli hostages. That is the way to end this insanity.

The 3rd intentional bombing of refugee tent camps in just 2 days happened not too long ago when I’m writing this, 5/28. This time, it was tents in Al-Mawasi where Palestinians burned to death. It was only the beginning of this month when Israel dropped evacuation leaflets across Rafah telling people to evacuate to areas including Al-Mawasi. We’ve seen the same pattern since 10/7 over and over, but it never becomes less disturbing and heartbreaking.
The Kuwaiti Hospital is now completely out of service due to lack of fuel. Prior to the shutdown, patients had to be treated immediately outside due to the sweltering heat inside the building where power had been cut off from everywhere but the most essential units. Israel’s ground assault and artillery fire has reached as far as the vicinity of the Kuwaiti Hospital. All patients and medical staff have been forced to relocate north to Khan Younis. All field hospitals in western Rafah are out of service. Khan Younis has been leveled. The former major hospital in the area, Nasser Medical Complex, has also been flattened.
This forced evacuation and displacement has forced the Kuwaiti Hospital’s severe burn patients from Israel’s recent massacre burning people alive, to leave. When Dr Muhammad al-Mughayer arrived at the scene, he described massive fires spreading across the tent refugee camp, and bodies burned severely, with limbs blown off. The few international medical staff that have been allowed to enter are being further restricted by Israel in the amount of supplies they can bring. Currently, the supplies that international medical staff can physically carry in with them are the major source of new supplies.

The videos and images of the Palestinian children who are being starved to death by Israel should haunt every human being with a conscience and basic morality. One of the most recent I’ve seen of a child near death’s door was shared maybe a month ago now, who was receiving the limited medical treatment that was still available at Kamal Adwan Hospital. This was after the most recent barbaric siege by Israel in February where the remaining medical staff who had not been murdered or abducted, had to treat people on the floor because there was no where else for the massive casualties. Even at that time, injured patients weren’t safe from Israeli violence. When Suhaib Shaaban tried to go where aid was being distributed because his sister was suffering severe malnutrition from being starved by Israel, and he was intentionally targeted, shot from tanks, and injured. All of this is from the end of February. The video of the child was from April. I wonder now, is Suhaib and his sister still alive? Has that child, emaciated- so underweight all bones visible, survived?
The entire population of northern Gaza is now in complete and total famine. No one in Gaza, even the majority in the south have reliable access to clean water and adequate food. Every single person is experiencing some form of malnutrition. Israel is starving over 2 million people to death, and you are helping them do it.

I’d like to share the recent response to Biden’s recent speech criticizing the peaceful protests and demonstrations on college campuses to advocate for the end to Israel’s genocide and their university’s complicity from the respected activist and author William C. Anderson. In response to Biden’s statement “Dissent must never lead to disorder”, Anderson wrote “In his letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr., told us the white moderate “is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice” and said this is someone who “prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.”” History is repeating itself right now in real-time, and this administration is, like it’s predecessors, on the wrong side. Over 2,400 American students have been detained by police for the “crime” of advocating for Palestinian human rights. History will look back on those students with honor, but this administration? Well, I think you can get the idea.
Meanwhile, Israel murdered another aid worker on 5/2, Ahmed, trying to deliver humanitarian supplies to northern Gaza. I’ve lost count at this point how many aid workers have been similarly murdered by Israel just in the past 30 days. I strongly agree with the recent letter 86 members of the House of Representatives sent to the Biden administration today advising they believe there is credible proof Israel is not complying with a provision of the US Foreign Assistance Act that requires recipients of our military aid to meet international humanitarian law.

You are allowing Leahy law to be violated. Yesterday, 4/29, our government found that at least 5 units of Israeli security forces have committed gross human rights violations and the State Department will not bar those unites from receiving U.S. military assistance. The fact sheet and introduction to Leahy vetting policy course are publicly available from the State Department’s own website. I’ve read it along with the Congressional Research Reports that are made for YOU regarding Leahy law, WRSA-I and other pre-positioned materiel, as well as other sources about how our government is supposed to ensure we are not complicit in gross human rights violations.
By the State Department’s own findings and admission, at least 5 units are not eligible for our military assistance. I strongly disagree with how Leahy vetting policy is allowed to be created and implemented by the same bodies it is meant to be enforced on, but even so, the State Department is violating the Leahy vetting policy they created by their inaction.
You are also allowing college students across our country to be brutalized and harassed by “law enforcement” and college administrations for their peaceful demonstrations, protests, and encampments demanding an end to Israel’s genocide and their college’s complicity in it. You clearly will not uphold national or international law, so you’ve left it to the people with humanity to. You have failed in every category to uphold our country’s obligation from the Genocide Convention and other treaties and agreements of international law to stop this genocide and the continued gross human rights violations Israel continues to barbarically commit.

Today, 4/21, another mass grave has been uncovered outside another hospital Israel has previously besieged and destroyed recently. This time, instead of the Al-Shifa hospital, it is the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Approximately 180 bodies have been recovered. As of 4/20, approximately 34,000 – 41,500 Palestinians have been murdered by Israel since 10/7 in the occupied Gaza strip. Unfortunately even the highest credible estimate is likely to be low – the conditions are so extreme it’s been nearly impossible for the community to identify and count the bodies. These estimates do not include those who have been starved to death or whose deaths are directly attributable to the total destruction of the healthcare, waste management, sanitation, and water systems. Meanwhile, you just gave Israel $26 billion more of my tax dollars.
I am disgusted with how much of American’s hard earned money you’ve been giving and continue to give a genocidal apartheid state. That money could be used for so many other things that would actually help us, but instead, you want to continue to fund genocide.
I demand that you:
– Hold Israel accountable for a permanent, immediate ceasefire, their violations of the Genocide Convention, and gross human rights violations by any means necessary
– Call for the immediate end of Israel’s occupation and apartheid and support Palestinians in their fight for freedom and peace
– Secure the immediate release and safety of all Palestinians who have been abducted and held captive by Israel, including those whose indefinite detention began prior to 10/7
– Permanently end all monetary, diplomatic, and military aid given to Israel and enforce Leahy Law
– Reallocate all funds given to Israel and commit additional resources for ongoing humanitarian relief for Palestinians starting with immediately resuming funding of UNRWA
– Immediately withdraw all U.S. troops, military assets, and all other assets deployed throughout the Middle East and cease all actions that further escalate a larger regional conflict
– Pass legislation that voids all anti-BDS laws at the federal level
– Vote no on H.R. 7521 and any similar legislation proposed

Al Jazeera quotes 34,049 dead as of 4/20/24. Al Jazeera always includes the most up-to-date official death tolls on their Breaking/live updates page. Because the daily live pages are refreshed so frequently for each new day, I can’t link you to a specific date. You can always check the Breaking/live section on their site for the most recent official numbers.
EuroMed Monitor quotes an estimated 41,496 dead shown on an infographic posted on their Instagram (link to post) as of 4/3/24. Their website has past infographics, but does not currently have this newest one included as of writing this blog post. This is not unusual- I believe they first post on social media and then add to the infographic section of their site later. Prior infographics posted on Instagram and then shown on their site have the exact same figures & data.
*Why are multiple sources used for the death count?
The situation in Gaza has only gotten worse since the AP published this article on 11/21. The official numbers we are seeing from Gaza’s Ministry of Health are undercounted, and have been since at least 11/21.
EuroMed Monitor is a NGO established in 2011 that advocates for the human rights of all persons across Europe and the MENA region. They have a regional office in the Palestinian Occupied Territories. I believe their estimates are credible which is why I quote them, and will continue to, when referring to the estimated death toll.
My personal opinion is that the true number is even higher than estimated- people are dying from starvation, thirst, infections, and illnesses. Even if the genocide ended this moment, these types of deaths will unfortunately continue for some time. I believe their deaths should be counted. They may not have been shot/bombed/etc. by the Israeli military, but their deaths are directly attributable to the total siege, occupation, and intentional** destruction of civilian, water, waste management, and medical infrastructure by Israel.

On 1/31/24, a U.S. federal court judge found that Israel is plausibly committing a genocide in the Defense for Children International – Palestine v. Biden, Blinken, & Austin case. This came only days after when on 1/26/24 the International Court of Justice also found that Israel is plausibly committing a genocide. On 10/17/24, Josh Paul, the former Director of the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs at the State Department resigned due to concerns that the U.S. arms transfers to Israel would be used to commit gross human rights abuses, lead to significant civilian casualties, and the policies in place to prevent these circumstances from occurring were not being followed for Israel. His declaration of support filed in the Defense for Children International – Palestine v. Biden case describes multiple incidents he witnessed of Leahy vetting policy being ignored in prior, credible allegations of Israel committing gross human rights violations.
Josh Paul knows when policy isn’t being followed – he had a significant role in policymaking for U.S. arms transfers and drafted the Conventional Arms Transfer (CAT) Policy. He was also detailed on a part-time basis in the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, Office of Security and Human Rights as a Special Advisor on U.S. arms transfers where he assessed existing processes for human rights reviews for arms transfers and made recommendations to improve the Department of State’s processes.
On 3/27/24, Annelle Sheline, a foreign affairs officer at the Office of Near Eastern Affairs in the Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor resigned due to our government enabling Israel’s actions after the ICJ’s ruling that Israel is plausibly committing a genocide. She was deeply and understandably perturbed that when she raised concerns about the intentional murder, attacks, and abduction of Palestinian journalists by Israel, the highest number of journalists who have been murdered in any single conflict since the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) began recording data in 1992, she was ignored. She decided to resign publicly when her colleagues begged her to speak out publicly, saying “Please speak for us.”
U.S. law is not being followed and you are letting this administration literally get away with murder, and participating by your lack of meaningful action. I know you don’t care about Palestinian lives, but how can you flagrantly disregard the rule of law of our nation?
