8/26 Petition to Kamala Harris

It’s absolutely unacceptable that patients and refugees are being forced to flee the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza. This is the only medical care facility in the area. An Israeli drone strike today, 8/26, murdered 7 people in central Gaza, further adding to the chaos of thousands of refugees fleeing the area. Where are the injured from that attack supposed to go? Deir el-Balah is where most Palestinians have been forced to flee to as one of Israel’s “designated humanitarian zones”. I fully expect to see the death toll from this attack rise due to injured people dying due to not being able to receive immediate, life saving medical care.

Since 10/7, Israel has murdered approximately 40,000 – 48,000 Palestinians in Gaza, 16,456 of which are children. If you look at the current death toll and include the best estimates available to count all indirect deaths as described in the academic paper “Counting the dead in Gaza: difficult but essential“, 202,175 Palestinians have been murdered.

I demand you do everything in your power to:

– Hold Israel accountable to a permanent, immediate ceasefire and for their repeat violations of international law

– Call for the immediate end of Israel’s occupation and apartheid

– Support Palestinians in their fight for freedom and peace

– Secure the immediate release and safety of all hostages, including Palestinians held by Israel in “military prisons”, including those whose indefinite detention began prior to 10/7

– Permanently end all monetary, diplomatic, and military aid given to Israel and enforce U.S. laws like Leahy Law and the Arms Export Control Act

– Resume full funding of UNRWA and allocate more funds to aid humanitarian efforts to rebuild Gaza, and provide Palestinians with the resources to survive and thrive

– Immediately withdraw all U.S. troops, military assets, and all other assets deployed throughout the Middle East and cease all actions that further escalate a larger regional conflict

– Void all anti-BDS laws and other laws that infringe on my right to freedom of speech to criticize any political ideology or country, and to use my money in ways that align with my values

Al Jazeera 8/26 Live Updates

Al Jazeera “Israel kills more than 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza, 16,456 of them children

Estimated deaths as of 8/21/24 – 8/26/24 from multiple sources*

Al Jazeera quotes 40,435 dead as of 8/26/24. Al Jazeera always includes the most up-to-date official death tolls on their Breaking/live updates page. Because the daily live pages are refreshed so frequently for each new day, I can’t link you to a specific date. You can always check the Breaking/live section on their site for the most recent official numbers.

EuroMed Monitor quotes an estimated 48,380 dead shown on an infographic posted on their Instagram (link to post) as of 8/21/24. Their website has past infographics, but does not currently have this newest one included as of writing this blog post. This is not unusual- I believe they first post on social media and then add to the infographic section of their site later. Prior infographics posted on Instagram and then shown on their site have the exact same figures & data.

If you use the multiplier for the number of indirect deaths for every reported death from The Lancet’s academic article, “Counting the dead in Gaza: difficult but essential“, you can calculate the estimated total death toll. This calculation looks like:

(Gaza Ministry # x 4) + Gaza Ministry #
(40,435 x 4) + 40,435 = 202,175

*Why are multiple sources used for the death count?

Associated Press “Gaza health officials say they lost the ability to count dead as Israeli offensive intensifies

The situation in Gaza has only gotten worse since the AP published this article on 11/21. The official numbers we are seeing from Gaza’s Ministry of Health are undercounted, and have been since at least 11/21.

EuroMed Monitor is a NGO established in 2011 that advocates for the human rights of all persons across Europe and the MENA region. They have a regional office in the Palestinian Occupied Territories. I believe their estimates are credible which is why I quote them, and will continue to, when referring to the estimated death toll.

My personal opinion is that the true number is even higher than estimated- people are dying from starvation, thirst, infections, and illnesses. Even if the genocide ended this moment, these types of deaths will unfortunately continue for some time. I believe their deaths should be counted. They may not have been shot/bombed/etc. by the Israeli military, but their deaths are directly attributable to the total siege, occupation, and intentional** destruction of civilian, water, waste management, and medical infrastructure by Israel.

**Why are you accusing Israel of intentionally destroying important infrastructure and targeting civilians?

It’s not an accusation. They’ve admitted to it.
